My name is Ana-Sophie and I am PhD candidate at the CET since December 2009. My project is part of a joint research project between the UWA (supervisor: Steffen Hagemann) and the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil (supervisor: Carlos A. Rosière). It is financially supported by the “Scholarship for International Research Fees” (SIRF), the “University Postgraduate Award (International Student)” (UPAIS), the “University International Stipend” (UIS) of the UWA, and the CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico).
The aims of this study are to constrain the genesis of various hypogene iron ore (Fe > 60 %) types in the Iron Quadrangle (Quadrilatero Ferrifero), Brazil with specific emphasis on their geological environment, mineralogy, geochemical signature of the mineralized rocks and fluid chemistry and source constraints on the paleohydrothermal fluids.
I completed my diploma degree at the Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich in geology with main subjects in “economic geology” and “hydrogeology”. My diploma thesis dealt with the mineralogy and geochemistry of the alteration zones and the mineralization in the “Pb-Zn-Ba ore deposits in Triades-Galana, W-Milos, Greece”. During my study, I could gain experience as teaching assistant at the “Department of Earth and Environmental Science” of the LMU Munich and as a student internship at the “Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy” of the University of Vienna (Austria).
After my diploma graduation I worked for 1.5 years as hydrogeologist in Salzburg, Austria. My main duties were the observation and sampling of surface- and groundwater in risk areas (e.g. construction sites, pits, tunnels), as well as hydrogeological modelling. Although I could gain a lot of interesting experience working in the field of hydrogeology, I decided to return to the study of ore deposits and to pursue the challenges associated with conducting my PhD project in Western Australia and Brazil.
