Under the supervision of John Miller, Leon Bagas and Cam McCuaig, Matt began PhD studies at the Centre for Exploration Targeting in June 2010 and will be working with Emmerson Resources in the Tennant Creek region of the Northern Territory. Emmerson Resources are exploring the Tennant Creek Mineral Field using cutting-edge exploration technologies and Matt’s project will be using this data and new field observations to develop three-dimensional structural models of the mineral field over time (4D structural modelling). He is aiming to address the controls of early architecture on the distribution of stratigraphy, intrusions, and faults; determine the timing of the deformation, magmatism, hydrothermal alteration and the Au-Bi-Cu mineralisation; and understand the role of fluid mixing in the region and its relationship to mineralisation. Research thus far for this project has focused on cross-gradient joint inversion modelling with Dr Luis Gallardo. This modelling has produced several north-south sections 60 km long and 12 km deep showing predicted magnetic and density properties of rocks below the surface at Tennant Creek. Work on the U-Pb geochronology of intrusive rocks sampled from the Tennant Creek region and from drill holes into the Southern Shear Zone has also been a priority of this project in the first year.
