As a student enrolling in honours at UWA you have the opportunity to participate in the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) Minerals Geoscience Honours Program (MGH).
This program offers a choice of nine short courses, located across the country, that are specifically designed to provide you with skills and knowledge relevant to future employment in the mining and exploration industry. You are encouraged to enrol in two of these courses; however it is also possible to attend only one course if your supervisor is in agreement. Travel bursaries are available to help with travel to the courses and you are encouraged to choose courses which are either of most relevance to your Honours project or which are totally different and enable you to widen your skill set.
This is an opportunity for you to visit other universities, experience different lecturers and speak to representatives from industry, to travel to other cities and places across Australia - places as far flung as Arkaroola in South Australia and Queenstown in Tasmania and to meet other students who you will probably come across again and again over the course of your working life. You do not have to pay any extra registration fees to participate in the MTEC program, it is an integral part of your Honours program however some of the courses do ask for a small fee to help cover accommodation/travel/field trip/printing costs.
The program has been operating in its current format since 2008 and the number of participants has increased dramatically since it was first implemented. The courses are highly regarded by industry and feedback from students in previous years has been extremely positive. A number of students have even been offered places on graduate training programs by representatives from industry they met while attending the courses.
You should enrol using the registration form on the website, access to the registration form is restricted so please contact Cindi Dunjey for the username and password. If you have any questions about the program or want to check whether there is still space available on any of the courses please contact the MGH national coordinator, Caroline Walker-Grime.
