CET PhD student John Sykes and CET Professor Allan Trench have won the AusIMM Best Paper Award for 2017 for their paper: "Using scenarios to investigate the long-term future of copper mining and guide exploration targeting strategies" which was presented at the International Mine Management Conference in Brisbane in September 2016.
The article applied adaptive scenario planning techniques to a range of top copper mines and projects and found that no asset is robust against a diverse range of future scenarios. The copper industry therefore either requires careful portfolio management to cover weaknesses in individual assets, or needs radical new types of assets robust against a range of futures.
