4D evolution of the Proterozoic Ntaka Hill mafic-ultramafic complex and associated Ni-Cu-PGE mineralisation, south-east Tanzania

This project aims to constrain the multi-scale 4D evolution of the Ntaka Hill mafic-ultramafic complex using a variety of geochemical, isotopic and geochronological methods. This data will be integrated to understand the large-scale setting and contect of the context within Africa and Gondwana, as well as elucidate the architecture of the intrusion itself and controls on high tenor Ni-Cu mineralisation.

The Ntaka Hill mafic-ultramafic complex is located in south-east Tanzania, and hosts abundant Ni-Cu-PGE mineralisation as disseminated, net-textured and massive sulphides. This project is focused on understanding the formation, evolution and architecture of the intrusive complex and mineralising environment using the following protocol:

  1. A program of U-Pb zircon geochronology, together with Hf-O isotopes on the country rock gneisses, mafic-ultramafic rocks and felsic intrusive rocks to elucidate the timing, source and large-scale geodynamic setting of the intrusive complex;

  2. Integrating geophysical and mapping datasets with deposit-scale whole-rock geochemistry, sulphur isotopes and mineral chemistry to understand the internal architecture of the intrusion and its relationship with Ni-Cu-PGE mineralisation; and

  3. Micro-scale work on thin-sections, together with U-Pb geochronology on monazite, to understand the timing and nature of the metamorphic history of the country rocks and intrusion, and how this may have affected the Ni-Cu-PGE mineralisation. The culmination of this research program will be an integrated, multi-scale 4D metollogenic model for the Ntaka Hill mafic ultramafic complex.
