Daniel joined the Geophysics and Computational Analysis group in CET in 2010. Prior to that he completed a PhD in Computer Science and then worked in industry developing image and video processing algorithms. His work primarily focuses on extracting features from various geophysical and geological images, and data visualisation problems. Automating feature extraction is a key interest due to the large amounts of data that are routinely collected nowadays which may take too long to fully process manually and hence can be prohibitively expensive. In addition to improvements in terms of speed and cost, the results are objective and reproducible.

Daniel has worked on projects ranging from visualisation of full tensor gradient (FTG) gravity surveys containing 5 independent components and covering large spatial areas, to detecting planar structures in acoustic and optical downhole image logs, classifying mined ore particles as being ore-bearing or waste particles from visual and hyperspectral features, and estimating the sedimentary grain size distribution within a core from high-resolution core photos.
