3D Geophysical Interpretation of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Boundary, Leo-Man Shield, West Africa

This PhD project comprises of two components. First, in order to describe the 3D geometry of the major geological units in the Archean/Paleoproterozoic contact zone in the Leo-Man Shield and visualize their spatial relations, 3D geological and geophysical modelling will be carried out. Geophysical modelling will be constrained with multidisciplinary geological information, to create the most realistic and reliable models. Given emphasis on “palaeo-suture zones” as key components in regional scale exploration targeting, the accurate definition of this zone is important for the assessment of the regions prospectivity.

A second aspect of the project will be defining a suitable workflow for enhancement and 3D modelling (including estimates of model uncertainty) of relatively low resolution magnetic and gravity data. Also, it is hoped to develop methodologies for representing/visualising ambiguity in geophysically derived cross sections and volumes of the subsurface.

Why my research is important

The research is part of a larger study of the area to understand its regional scale prospectivity, the project is undertaken under the umbrella of the multinational WAXI initiative. The results will help to better understand the tectonics of this area, which is highly mineralised and very attractive for mineral exploration.
