Sam commenced his PhD in June 2016 under the supervision of Allan Trench and Steffen Hagemann. He will be investigating the geological controls on the operating cost structure of Australian and New Zealand gold mines. The aim is to link economics with geology to understand the drivers of competitive advantage amongst gold deposits, additionally this will provide an extra set of criteria for exploration targeting.

Sam has a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Geology from the University of Otago, New Zealand and has completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment. For the last 20 years he has worked in mineral exploration, resource development and consulting roles within Australia and Asia primarily in gold, base metals and uranium. He is a Member of Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (MAusIMM), Australian Institute of Geoscientists (MAIG) and a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FFin).

Outside of university, Sam is a Principal Consultant with Ravensgate Mining Industry Consultants where he is a VALMIN Practitioner undertaking technical assessments and valuations of mineral assets.
