About
Carolina holds a bachelor diploma in Geology from the University of São Paulo (USP) where she dedicated her studies to the genesis of deposits in the Iron Quadrangle, a traditional ore province in Brazil. Research has captivated her since the early stages of her studies. She is fascinated with ore geology, environmental geochemistry and sustainable approaches related to mining. During her academic pathway she developed research in economic geology, mine waste, theory of sampling and sedimentology.
After completing her bachelor, she started the EMerald Erasmus Mundus Master in Georesources Engineering, a two-year Master program organized by a consortium of 4 European universities: University of Liège (Belgium), National Superior School of Geology (France), Luleå University of Technology (Sweden) and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany). For her master thesis, she developed a research on acid mine drainage (AMD) in a partnership with DPM-Chelopech, a copper and gold mine located in Bulgaria. The objective was to comprehend the long-term geochemical behaviour of the waste material to establish a sustainable operation.
Her motivation to teach grew when she decided to follow an academic career to inspire students around the world and in her home country. After completing her master, she worked as assistant professor of Geostatistics in the Minerals Engineering (GeMMe) department at the University of Liege (ULiege), a core partner of the EIT RawMaterials. Her curiosity about mine challenges and ore-forming processes has grown in the past few years.
Carolina joined the Centre for Exploration Targeting in April 2021 as a PhD candidate under the supervision of Marco Fiorentini, Robert Loucks, Charlotte Allen and Steffen Hagemann. Her project aims to define magmatic fertility indicators for gold-rich magmatic-hydrothermal deposits using whole-rock and accessory mineral geochemistry.
