Luke is a third year PhD student studying resolution enhancement of geophysical data using deep learning. Luke holds a double major in geology and geophysics from Macquarie University, NSW, and completed a Master of Research at the same institution investigating the use of precision GPS for UAV based geophysics and photogrammetry.
He and his team have twice placed in the Frank Arnott / Next Generation Explorers Award for geoscience data integration and visualisation, taking him to leading conferences including Exploration ’17, SEGJ 2018, AEGC 2018, and PDAC 2020. He has also served as the Technical Officer on the committee for the highly successful GESSS-WA 2021 student symposium.
Following his studies, he worked as an Earth Observation Satellite consultant in a small company providing services to scientific institutes and government space agencies such as Geoscience Australia, NASA, JAXA, and ESA. His role included application development and testing for the Open Data Cube and Digital Earth Australia, database maintenance for the CEOS Missions, Instruments and Measurements database, and administrative support to international meetings and conferences.
Luke is actively learning data science and data engineering for his machine learning studies, and has developed numerous geoscience programs using Python. He enjoys the challenge of maintaining a variety of computer systems for his research, and hosts his own virtualised servers for programming at home, as well as a wide variety of outdoor pursuits.
