Quantitative exploration of spatiotemporal metasomatic mantle sources of metals (QUEST)
Start Date:
1 Jan 2025
End Date:
31 Dec 2028

Challenge:
Mineral system models have traditionally treated the Earth’s mantle as uniform, yet evidence now shows that hydrous metasomatised mantle domains – zones altered by fluids – are enriched in copper, nickel, cobalt, chromium, and platinum-group elements (PGEs). The contribution of these domains to ore deposit formation remains poorly understood.

Aim:
To investigate how hydrous metasomatised mantle regions influence the formation of critical and precious metal deposits, and to redefine the role of the mantle in global mineral systems.

Approach:
An integrated program of field studies, high-pressure experiments, and advanced geochemical analysis will be used to determine how metals and sulfur are mobilised and concentrated as melts rise from the deep mantle to the crust.

Expected Outcomes:
Develop a geochemical toolbox – a suite of tracers and discriminants – to identify metasomatised mantle sources and predict where metal-rich systems may form. The project will also provide practical tools, training workshops, and open-access data to support exploration and research.

Context:
QUEST is redefining how we understand the origins of critical and precious metals within the Earth’s mantle. By combining expertise in experimental petrology, geochemistry, and mineral systems science, the project explores how hidden mantle regions may have played a key role in forming major ore systems, including sediment-hosted copper, IOCG, porphyry, and magmatic sulfide deposits.
