About
Marko’s love for science started early, during his secondary school years at the Petnica Science Centre, where a hands-on geology programme first inspired his interest in geoscience. Since then, Marko has been passionate about expanding scientific knowledge, supporting youth education, and encouraging new generations to engage with science.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Geophysics from the University of Belgrade and earned his Master of Science through the IDEA League Joint Master Programme, a collaborative programme between Delft University of Technology, ETH Zürich, and RWTH Aachen University.
Before commencing his PhD studies at the University of Western Australia, Marko worked at the Science and Technology Centre in Serbia, contributing to applied geophysical research and development, while also fostering collaboration with educational and scientific institutions both in Serbia and abroad. As a member of the Association of Geophysicists and Environmentalists of Serbia (AGES), he actively organised conferences, field camps, and workshops in collaboration with the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). These projects had a strong community focus, involving university and high school students from diverse backgrounds to promote science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and social impact. Many of these activities aimed to make geoscience more accessible and meaningful to the wider public, fostering a spirit of cooperation and scientific curiosity at the local level.
He has also served as a long-time member of SEG’s Global Affairs Committee and the Committee of University and Student Programme, including several years as Chair of the Student Excellence Programme Subcommittee.
Beyond his scientific work, Marko is an assistant at the Power of Communication Institute in Serbia, where he supports educational programmes focused on personal and professional development.
PhD Project
Marko Vanić joined the Centre for Exploration Targeting at the University of Western Australia in June 2025 as a PhD candidate. His research focuses on developing and applying innovative workflows for data integration in geometrical inversion. By combining different geophysical datasets and applying machine learning, he aims to improve our understanding of the Earth’s subsurface, especially in the search for hidden mineral resources. Bringing together technical expertise, international experience, and a collaborative spirit, Marko approaches his PhD not only as a research journey but as an opportunity to grow with purpose. He enjoys creating spaces where knowledge is shared, curiosity is encouraged, and people are inspired to connect and thrive, whether in science, education, or broader community initiatives.
